Estyn Llaw was established in 2000
to support voluntary and community organisations in becoming
more bilingual and to promote volunteering opportunities amongst
Welsh speakers. The project is managed by Iaith Cyf. and we
work from our offices based in Aberystwyth and Newcastle Emlyn.
Estyn Llaw has two main aims:
- To support voluntary and community
organisations in the development of bilingualism
- To increase
the amount of voluntary work carried out through the
medium of Welsh.

Estyn Llaw is constantly developing its working methods,
and the fact that we are able to be sufficiently flexible
enables us to respond to the various needs of organisations
and volunteers in different areas. Our work is generally
community-based and we are eager to see the Welsh language
being mainstreamed as an integral part of the work of the
sector. We organise our work in partnership with a number
of other key organisations such as the following: Wales Council
for Voluntary Action, Councils for Voluntary Service, local
Volunteer Bureaux and Mentrau Iaith.
Listed below are examples of the type of activities led
recently by Estyn Llaw or which involved contributions by
Estyn Llaw:
- Research reviews carried out to study Welsh
volunteering patterns and the levels of bilingual work
in organisations and bodies in the voluntary sector
- Dissemination of information and awareness raising
campaigns relating to the importance of bilingualism across
the voluntary sector
- Establishment of working agreements with individual
organisations via links with Field Officers providing advice
and information
- Campaigns to recruit bilingual volunteers
- Dissemination of information and awareness raising
campaigns amongst Welsh networks relating to volunteering
opportunities
- Organisation and development of training to
promote bilingual work in the voluntary sector
- Displays taken to local events.
